In the final version of the game, the player only faces the Earth Guardian, with the other battles happening off-screen. According to Aoki, the game was originally meant to feature four elemental guardians, with the party needing to split into groups of two to face them. FF9 Event Designer Kazuhiko Aoki recently told the PlayStation Blog about content that was cut from the game. It seems that the memory available on four CD-ROMs wasn't enough for FF9, as the game still needed to have content cut, in order for it to fit on the discs. Square Enix (then known as Squaresoft) quickly filled up the mainline Final Fantasy games with FMVs, forcing them to spread the games across multiple discs. CD-ROMs could hold considerably more space than an N64 cartridge, allowing for games to include FMVs and higher-quality audio.

One of the main reasons why the Final Fantasy series made the jump from Nintendo systems to the original PlayStation was due to it using CD-ROM format for its games.

Square Enix might want to turn FF9 into a multimedia franchise for people of all ages, which means that a revival of the video game makes sense. FF9 is being turned into an animated show, with kids and young teens being the target audience. It might seem strange for FF9 to receive a remake, but there is at least one good reason why it could be in development. It bears mentioning that it hasn't been 100% confirmed that this leak is accurate, but at least one of the games on the list has been announced ( Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition), and there is evidence to suggest that Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster is in development.

Square Enix has several games on the list, including a PC version of FF7 Remake, FF16, Kingdom Hearts 4, and remasters of Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Tactics Ogre. The FF9 Remake also appears on this list. This was a datamine that revealed the identity of several upcoming games, even though Nvidia insists that the list is speculatory. What is surprising is that FF9 appears to be in line for a remake, even ahead of FF8. The reason fans are aware of this is due to the recent Nvidia GeForce games list leak. By far the most high-profile of these games is FF7 Remake, which is set to become its own series that will retell the story of FF7 over several games. It's not surprising that there are so many Final Fantasy remakes and remasters, considering Square Enix lost the source code for many of its older games. Square Enix has been on a remaster and remake push over the past few years, bringing obscure games from the SaGa franchise to international audiences, as well as reviving some classic Final Fantasy games, such as the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters.

The rumored FF9 Remake not only has the chance to bring the world of the game to life in a manner that was only ever seen in FF9's FMVs, but it could also bring back content that was planned to appear in the game but was cut during development, due to the limitations of the PlayStation. It's already possible to play the game on modern systems, thanks to the remastered version of the game that is available on most platforms, but time hasn't been kind to FF9's character models or backgrounds. If this is true, then one of the best JRPGs on the original PlayStation will be revived in a modern form. This likely reflects the developers becoming more comfortable with the PlayStation hardware over time, and maximizing the space available to them, rather than allowing unused assets to take up space on the discs. FF7 and FF8 both had functional debug rooms that could be visited using GameShark codes, while Final Fantasy Tactics was packed with unused battle maps and characters.

These pieces of content were never meant to be discovered by the player, but dataminers have managed to uncover them by exploring the files.įF9 has comparatively little content compared to the other Final Fantasy games on the original PlayStation. It's common for the Final Fantasy games to have cut content that is hidden in the files, such as the Easter egg debug room in FF7 where Aerith makes an incredibly creepy comment. The rumored Final Fantasy IX Remakehas the chance to restore part of the game that was cut during development.
