According to Aoki, the game was originally meant to feature four elemental guardians, with the party needing to split into groups of two to face them. FF9 Event Designer Kazuhiko Aoki recently told the PlayStation Blog about content that was cut from the game. It seems that the memory available on four CD-ROMs wasn't enough for FF9, as the game still needed to have content cut, in order for it to fit on the discs. Square Enix (then known as Squaresoft) quickly filled up the mainline Final Fantasy games with FMVs, forcing them to spread the games across multiple discs. CD-ROMs could hold considerably more space than an N64 cartridge, allowing for games to include FMVs and higher-quality audio.

Square Enix has been on a remaster and remake push over the past few years, bringing obscure games from the SaGa franchise to international audiences, as well as reviving some classic Final Fantasy games, such as the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters.
The rumored FF9 Remake not only has the chance to bring the world of the game to life in a manner that was only ever seen in FF9's FMVs, but it could also bring back content that was planned to appear in the game but was cut during development, due to the limitations of the PlayStation. It's already possible to play the game on modern systems, thanks to the remastered version of the game that is available on most platforms, but time hasn't been kind to FF9's character models or backgrounds. If this is true, then one of the best JRPGs on the original PlayStation will be revived in a modern form.
